Ministry of the Economy announces Cláudio Vilar Furtado as the new President of the Brazilian PTO

The Ministry of the Economy announced this Tuesday, January 8th, the nomination of Mr. Cláudio Vilar Furtado as the new President of the Brazilian Patent Office (BRPTO).

Mr. Furtado has been a tenured professor at Business Administration School (EAESP) of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) since 1974, where he has taught Investment Strategy, Corporate Finance, Private Equity and Venture Capital. In 2003, he founded FGV’s Center for Research in Private Equity and Venture Capital (GV Cepe) of which he is currently the Executive Director. He is the co-author of “The First Brazilian Census of the Private Equity and Venture Capital Industry” and “The Private Equity and Venture Capital Industry: The Second Census”.

Mr. Furtado is Managing Partner of CVF Finanças e Investimentos, a Financial Strategy, Corporate Finance and Applied Economics consultancy. He is also a Board member of Solar BR, a subsidiary of The Coca Cola Company and joint venture between Grupo Jereissati and Mello Group. He has been an expert witness in various national and international arbitrations.

He was a Board Member of ATENTO Holding Inversiones y Teleservicios, a subsidiary of the Telefónica Group in Madrid from 2008 to 2012. He was project Director of FGV-Projetos for the Telecommunications Industry from 1995 to 2004. He has served as Executive Vice President at ABC- Bull and Director of Business Development at Elebra until 1989.

Mr. Furtado received a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from FGV and a Master’s Degree in Business Economics from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where he also undertook doctoral education in Finance (PhD, abd). He received his Doctoral Degree in Business Administration from FGV in 1997.
