Brazil is no longer a rising star of the IP galaxy; it is already one of the most important jurisdictions in global IP strategy. Thiswas the key message from speakers at last week’s Latin America IP Summit, hosted by IAM and its sister publication WorldTrademark Review in São Paulo.
But, while leading in-house professionals commented on the advantages of Brazilian litigation – especially for SEP licensingefforts – other speakers shone light on some of the difficulties of managing and enforcing patents, brand rights and know-how in Latin America’s largest economy.
Among the event’s speakers was Benjamin Wu, who manages Huawei’s Americas IPR department, who described Brazil asa “hot jurisdiction” for IP protection. Expressing – like all of the event’s panellists – his own views, rather than those of hisemployer, Wu said that he was paying close attention to Brazil, because it is the region’s largest economy, and commentedthat IP protection in the jurisdiction can play an important role in resolving the global disputes that typically emerge in the ITsector, especially regarding SEPs.
